Donghui Liu

My name is Donghui Liu, I came to Canada three years ago from China as an international student. I am currently in my last year of visual arts undergraduate at York University, Toronto. Having a diaspora experience inspired me to explore the relationship between humans, nature and our living space through my artistic practice. I mainly use mediums including acrylic painting, photography and performance art to investigate this theme.

During the residency for Once Upon Water, I want to explore further the role of water in our day-to-day practice. It helps us travel from our homeland to another land, it forms our body and keeps us alive. I plan to create around 3 to 5 pieces of 18’’x24’’ watercolour painting combing abstract and realistic elements under the theme of exploring the relationship between water and human and how we see water. I choose watercolour because it includes the element of water and the colour can be dynamic. I want to express the idea of using coloured water to revisit the concept of presenting aquatic elements and combining them with human emotions.
